10 Minute Workout With a Toddler

What? What? Guess who is back with more workouts???

10minute

The last few months of juggling life, Luna and the blog have been challenging. I am trying so hard to manage everything without ever having a sitter (like, ever), and it’s tough. Just last week, I went through my stats and realized that I am getting tons of hits on my “10 Minute Prenatal Workout” blogs and I am stoked! I LOVED exercising during pregnancy and love even more that I have been able to keep it up since having Luna. Thank you so much to everyone trying out the prenatal workouts!

I wish wish wish I would have written about working out with a newborn and an infant, but you know, you live and learn and now I’m back and ready to share new workouts with you! Since having Luna I have completed Shaun T’s T25, P90X3 and am almost done with the 4th month of Insanity Max 30. I have also picked up running and walking. Luna is with me during each and every workout (unless she by some miracle is napping). Having her with me has taught me a couple of things about the challenges of working out with an infant and toddler. I’ve learned a lot.

We workout in a fairly large room and basically let her have free reign. She runs around, plays with her toys, eats snacks and of course, interacts with us. She babbles, yells, pulls, points, pokes and climbs all over us. There are often occasions where I hold her and workout with her in tow. So, today’s 10 Minute Workout is going to include those exercises that her and I have found to be the most successful for Mommy-toddler workout time.

This workout uses no equipment and can be done virtually anywhere! Do each exercise move for 1 minute. I suggest doing this when you are a) Trying to squeeze in a quick workout. b) In need of a warm-up. or c) Trying to entertain your child while simultaneously energizing yourself. Of course, you could always do it three times in a row for a good 30 minute workout!

(I KNOW some of these photos are blurry. Blame it on the toddler.)

10 Minute Workout With a Toddler

1. Squat, squat, squat, squat, squat, squat, squat, squat, squat, squat, squat, squat, squat, squat, squat, squat EVERYBODY! Hold that baby and get low. Remember, sit your butt back, chest up and don’t let your knees go past your toes.

squats

2. While lunging you can hold your baby facing you, or facing out while sitting on your thigh. Do 30 seconds on each side. Keep you knee in line with your ankle. If you are feeling really strong do an extra 30 seconds of pulsing on each side!

lunges

3. Luna is a big fan of knee lifts. The faster the better. Lift each knee as high as you can, tighten your abs and tilt your hips under.

knee lift

4. In hindsight, carrying your baby on your shoulders may not be the best idea. Hold your little one however you feel safe in comfortable and lift those heels up! Don’t forget to tighten that booty!

calf raises

5. The ab twist is another favorite of Luna’s. I usually have to switch her to my other hip halfway through, but she loves being twisted from side. Remember to hold your abs in tight, keep your back straight and knees slightly bent.

ab twist

6. The pelvic lift is so good! Lie back, tighten your glutes and abs, and lift and lower down. Luna tends to run over and jump on me for a ride every single time I try this.

pelvic LIFT

7. Time to work the arms. Clearly, Luna has made herself right at home. Keep your bottom off the floor, and lift and lower you body while making sure your elbows go back, not to the sides, as you lower down.

tricep dips

8. Time for some ab work. I love V-sits but it’s near impossible to do them when Luna is crawling all of me. The trick is to use your arms. It’s not considered cheating when a 23 pound baby is jumping on your chest. Just focus on squeezing your abs and using your lower abdominals to hold up your legs.

vsit

9. For your low plank, go to your elbows, keep you body straight (no butts in the air or sagging hips). Let your babe go wild. Luna enjoys crawling over and under me.

low plank

10. Finish it off with some cardio! Run in place! When the little one starts begging for attention, grab their hands and have them run with you! Fun for the whole family.

Good luck peeps! Let me know what you think of the new workout and any new workouts you would like to see!

The MOOsic City Run

She loved running all over the park with her purse!

Another run and another sunny and warm weekend is in the books! This spring weather in Tennessee is wonderful. I don’t mind the rain a bit, and I’m soaking up as much outdoor time as possible before the unbearable summer heat hits. Plus, this was probably one of the most pleasant races we are going to be able to run until fall. Saturday morning we (our growing team!) ran the Purity’s Moosic City Dairy Dash benefiting Our Kids.

Always the entertainer... Luna stood on the winners' podium and dance for the crowd.

Can you guess what we dressed as for this race?

Cows, of course! Our official team name was “Bellarie’s Bovines”. Unfortunately, there was no costume contest, but we did run at a 7.48/mile pace! I’m especially proud of that time because we have only been running once a week lately. I guess Insanity Max 30 is doing a good job of keeping my cardio up.

Aunt Amy (the newest team member) ran her second race with us and beat her previous finishing time by 5 minutes. That is incredible! I am so proud of her, and super excited about running more races together.

When we finished the race we were treated with milk, chocolate milk, juice, popsicles, ice cream, mac & cheese and meatballs! I think Luna, our farmer, enjoyed the treats most. Her first sip of chocolate milk was definitely a hit.

And, THEN it was time to get naked!
And, THEN it was time to get naked!

We completed our race day tradition with breakfast and Starbucks. Then, we took a sunny 6 mile walk, played at the park, did our Saturday Insanity Max workout, worked in my flower bed, made dinner and got in bed by 8pm! That was not only a very busy very fun day, but the earliest I have gotten in bed in probably 15 years. It. was. wonderful.

It was the perfect day to run around the yard naked and play in the water.

Bring it, Monday.

P.S. WARNING- if you let your baby run around naked there is a good chance they will poop on your porch.

My Favorite 5k Yet

Our Valentine’s Day began bright and early, well dark and early. I was up at 4:30 am, and for once, it wasn’t Luna’s fault. We had to get up, get ready, drop-off baby at the Grandparents and head downtown for the Hot Chocolate Run!!! Who wouldn’t want to do a run with that title?

IMG_20150214_073318633_HDR

It was the most organized and well put together race. It all began at the Expo where we easily picked up our race packets and hoodies. Everyone was so nice and helpful. They allowed us to try on the hoodies and even exchange them for a different size if it was needed. Everything was neatly stacked, color coded and well-stocked. It is one of the few races where I actually got the size I requested. They also handed out hot chocolate and chocolate dipped marshmallows, not a bad way to kick off the even.

The Hot Chocolate Run is by far the biggest race we’ve ever done. Over 9,000 people signed up, and when we parked downtown at 6am, the only people we saw walking the streets were other runners. It was below freezing, but everyone seemed happy and excited at the prospect of running towards a mug of hot chocolate. We were running a little late (surprise, surprise), and had to park about a mile from the Start line, so by the time we arrived and joined our corral the race started.

IMG_20150214_074943883

Dressed in matching Valentine accessories, we ran around Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park and through the streets downtown. Since so many people were there, it made running a lot more fun and the race went by much faster. There were tons of excited volunteers cheering us on as we ran, photographers, signs, and video cameras. As we approached the finished line the race announcer actually said our names over the speakers…Here comes Hilarie! Bella is approaching the finish line.. It was all very motivating. At least it must have been because we finished the race with an 8.10 pace and we haven’t run in weeks. I was very happy with that time.

IMG_20150214_073653622

After we caught our breath we picked up our mug full of hot chocolate, fondue and treats to dip in our fondue… all of which were delicious and so needed. We were freezing when we finished! The little amount we sweated chilled us to the bone once we stopped moving. We stuck around to check out the after party, but soon enough we were too cold and left for our traditional breakfast, cupcake and Starbucks. It was the perfect way to start our day of love.

IMG_20150214_075301526_HDR

Thanks, Husband for running with me, even though I know you are faster, hate running and don’t actually enjoy us forcing everyone to wear matching outfits. I love you the most. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Cheers!

A Half-Crunchy Mom’s Fav New Product (Giveaway!)

goddessgarden

There’s this term people use when referring to hippy-ish Moms, they say Crunchy Moms. “Crunchy Moms” are the Moms who raise chickens, cloth diaper, grow and make their own everything, swear by all-organic products, home-birth and homeschool, don’t own TV’s and the so on. The nickname is not an insult (I don’t think, anyways), it’s just a trendy new name, and today I’m reviewing a trendy “crunchy” item that most Moms (the crunchy and the non-crunchy) will love.

For the record, I think I’m half-crunchy, half-what’s the opposite of crunchy? Chewy? Can I be crispy? I do use cloth diapers, drive a Prius, make my own baby-food, breastfeed and buy eggs from our neighbors, but I also eat Taco Bell, drink too much Starbucks, binge on Netflix, use paper towels and refuse to give up tampons so I don’t think the “crunchy” society would allow me to join. That’s cool, I prefer to be my own leader anyhow. However, I do love to find a good healthy and organic alternatives to mainstream baby products.

Before our annual beach vacation I began looking for baby-safe beach products, partially because I’m an awesome Mom who wants only the best for my baby and partially because I like any excuse to shop. While searching I immediately came across many all natural baby-safe sunscreens. I was intrigued and decided to try Goddess Garden’s Natural Kid’s Sunscreen. The crunchy half of me LOVES that it is made in a recyclable container, made with organic and all natural ingredients (like aloe vera, sunflower oil, soy beans, zinc oxide, lavender and radish). The consumerist side of me loves that it’s pretty, smells good and does the job.

I have now tested this sunscreen at the pool, at Holiday World, at the beach and at home. The outcome? Luna has never gotten a sunburn. We did our best to follow the instructions: reapply after 40 minutes of swimming or 2 hours in the sun. We mostly remembered to reapply at the right time, but we aren’t perfect and Luna still never got any sun. We spent ALL day EVERY day in the sun at Hilton Head too. It isn’t exactly like other sunscreens, but Husband an I used the mainstream brands and both got burned… I’m thrilled I used the all natural brand on Luna.

Happy to be on the beach for the first time.
Happy to be on the beach for the first time.

This sunscreen is very watery, so I shake it before squeezing any out to thicken it up a bit. I found it easiest to apply quickly because the longer I took to rub it in the thicker and pastier it became. It left a bit of a white residue on Luna’s skin (mostly when she got wet), but who cares? She’s a baby and it kept her from getting burnt, isn’t full of chemicals and left her skin soft and smooth; that’s much more important to me than having a completely invisible sunscreen. Overall, I am really happy with the product and the company.

Goddess Garden was created by a Mom who wanted skincare products that would be safe for her daughter who is allergic to chemicals. She saw a need in the market and went for it. She also happens to care about the planet and is just an overall nice and generous person. In fact, she’s so nice that she is giving away a two bottles of her sunscreen to two of you! One of you will get a 6oz bottle of the the Kids Natural Sunscreen SPF 30 ($20 value) and one will receive a 3.4oz bottle ($15 value) of the same.

Staying Strong, and Why You Should Join Me

Our "flex Friday" photo for Shaun T
Our “flex Friday” photo for Shaun T

We are now three weeks into our T25-eat-healthtier-no-chips-post-partum plan. We have not only stayed on the schedule with Shaun T and T25, but we are doing it with friends a few days a week. I have also been making it a point to get outside and take walks when it’s actually sunny and nice out. AND, I have had zero chips! Yay me! I’m not eating completely healthy all the time, but it’s getting better. I’m even making dinner most nights, which is proof that miracles do happen. (And, I’m not talking frozen pizzas either.)

If you are on in the process of trying to get into  habit of exercising, or maybe you’ve just slacked off lately, I’d like to challenge you to get back to it. Find a friend, family member, or significant other to do it with you or at least hold you accountable. It makes a HUGE difference when you have someone who is depending on you, challenging you and motivating you. Set your alarm, get up and get it done. You will be so glad you did, and here’s why!

1. You will be happier. Take it from a person who battles anxiety, panic and her share of depression… those endorphins do wonders for the mind! Anytime you are feeling down, just get up and get your heart rate going. Sweat a little and I guarantee you feel better and happier. Sometimes just stretching or taking a walk can prevent a panic attack for me.

pic20140330182620
Working out with this smiley baby doesn’t hurt either!

2. You will look better. Yeah, yeah, we should work out to have a strong heart, a clear mind and better joints, blah blah blah. You will also have a nice ass, abs, killer legs and cut arms. Seriously, though, exercising gives you confidence and when you are confident and feel good, you look hot. You don’t actually need a six-pack or a cellulite-free bottom to look hot, either.

My body is completely different after having a baby, but I'm super proud of what my body has been through and what it's capable of. I love being strong.

3. You will live longer. For all the reasons listed above…you will be happier, healthier and a better version of yourself. With reduced stress, lower blood pressure and a positive outlook you have a much higher percentage of living longer. So, join me, start a plan, get moving and let me know how you’re feeling!

I want a healthy body so I can keep up with this one once she's mobile!

I’ll report back in two weeks with our first photos of progress after the first 5 weeks of T25. Happy Saturday!

My Postnatal Eating Plan

sad

I spent way too much time in high school dieting (i.e. starving myself) to “diet” as an adult. Truth is, I grew up and learned how unhealthy I was as a teenager (skinny does not equal healthy) and learned that eating real and healthy food is much better than no food at all. I began eating less fried food and adding way more fruits and veggies to my diet. Then, around 6 years ago I decided to become a vegetarian. Although, a year ago I started eating seafood again. The technical term for that is “pescatarian”, but I feel very douchey anytime I say that word. Basically, I’ve been a mostly healthy eater for a while now.

anti-anxiety

My diet is healthy, but I do not diet…that makes sense, right? Typically, I do not cut foods out of my diet either. I think the phrase, “everything in moderation” is tried and true. So, if I want fries or a dark chocolate bar, I have some. However, I share my fries and I eat the chocolate bar over a few days. I stuck to my regular diet during pregnancy, worked out regularly and gained about 28 pounds. After having Luna, I was sick, did not eat for 5 days, lost 30 pounds WAY too quickly and therefore ate whatever the hell I wanted once I felt better. NOW, I’m back to the regular diet again, but I’m about to do some tweaking.

chocolate

I stopped counting calories and weighing myself after my high school obsession. Instead, I focus on how I feel, look and how my clothes fit. Since, I am breastfeeding I need more calories than the average bear, but I also need to eat healthy because what I eat, she eats. My stomach is much softer than it used to be so I’d like to tighten that up. AND, I want to keep my anxiety at bay. Diet and exercise have a huge effect on stress and anxiety. I need a plan that will help me eat healthy, tone up and ease anxiety.

app

Here’s what I’m doing for the next few months (simultaneously with my “prenatal workout plan“.

-First, I am cutting out chips. Why? Because I have no self-control when it comes to chips. I cannot just eat a few. I always eat the entire bag, no matter the size, in one sitting. No good comes from chips, so while I get back into shape, chips are forbidden. (I almost deleted this one.)

-I am eating protein every morning. Studies show that eating protein in the AM can ward off anxiety throughout the day. It gives you more energy and keeps your blood sugar stable. Bring on the eggs!

-I am limiting caffeine. I know caffeine makes you jittery and heightens anxiety, but I am stubborn and do not want to cut it out, like ever. I am a passionate coffee drinker. Coffee is what I think about as I lie my head down at night because I cannot wait to wake up and drink a large hot mug of coffee on the couch. It’s a lovely tradition and one cup in the morning will not put me in a panic.

caffeine

– I am drinking a butt-load of water. Dehydration, even the tiniest bit makes you feel awful and definitely affects your mood. The more water I drink the better I feel, physically and mentally.

-I will start eating more vitamin B. Apparently, this vitamin affects your brains  neurotransmitters which fights anxiety. So, I’ll be adding more cauliflower, salmon, eggs, nuts and leafy greens. BTW, I tried making the trendy Mashed Cauliflower everyone keeps raving about and I failed miserably. I’ll stick to mashed potatoes for now.

-I am going to eat foods with more tryptophan. This is the stuff helps you sleep better…nuts, soy products, eggs, tofu, and fish all have tryptophan and are all a part of my healthy eating plan.

-Sadly, I must eat less dairy. I am lactose-intolerant and this can cause irritability and moodiness. During the pregnancy, I ate way more dairy than I ever do because I craved it like crazy. Now, I am trying really hard to cut it out again, but it is so not easy. How can I eat Mexican food and not eat cheese??? It just isn’t right.

-I am eating more healthy fats and fatty acids. Fatty acids actually have a huge impact on your brain and mood. I will be eating a lot of avocados, fish and raw nuts.

-I am also trying to cut out the majority of processed foods. That crap is just crap that can’t be good for our bodies or our minds. I know I won’t cut them out completely, but I’m making an effort to eat way more real and fresh foods.

slap

That’s the plan. I’ll still snack on popcorn, get dessert when we go out and share fries with Husband..definitely not depriving myself. After the next few months I think I’ll not only be ready to hit the beach, but I’m also hoping to be in a calmer state of mind. Who knows, maybe I’ll be able to cut out the anxiety meds altogether, but that’s not my main concern. I just want to be healthy, happy and a good role model for Luna.

Cheers!

Lots of Green Going On

Oh yeah! It’s holiday time, once again! Holidays are even better now because instead of just dressing up myself, I get to dress up a cute little baby! Woo!

Lots of green happening here

We spent the day inside (darn cold weather), but we were healthy and productive so it was definitely a good day. During one of Luna’s many mini-naps, I made “Leprechaun Hats“. I found them on Pinterest and put them together to share on my other blog of work “Get Kidz Fit“.

corrected

And, because I now fancy myself a chef, I made an amazing (if I do say so myself) green and healthy dinner. I recently learned to pan-fry tilapia, so I’ve made it 3 times in the last week. Every time I make it I ask Husband if it’s the most delicious thing he ever had…he always says yes because he knows he must play along. I then talk about how very impressed I am with myself because…well, I am. A year ago, we were only eating dinner that was delivered by bicycle. (Oh, how I miss Seamless and Manhattan!)

AND, because I’m trying to be extra healthy I made a Green Protein smoothie.

Tomorrow, I’ll let you know how my new workout plan is going. Exercising is so important for keeping anxiety down, and I’m already feeling more zen.
