Passport Photo Fail

We are going to London!!!! I am beyond excited to be planning a big trip. It has been WAY too long since Husband and I have traveled internationally (our Honeymoon), and this will be Luna’s first international trip. None of us have ever been to England, and while it’s not quite as adventurous as our previous travels, it’s definitely one of those must-see places in the world. The planning and prepping is in full-swing right now, and the first big step was to renew my passport and to get Luna her very first passport.

After A LOT of paperwork I head to Walgreens, Luna in tow, to quickly get some passport photos taken. It wasn’t ideal, my hair was dirty and I quickly splattered on a bit of makeup on the drive there, but whatever, I just needed to get this done. Getting my photo taken was fairly painless, minus the embarrassment of standing in the middle of a store wondering whether or not I should smile while the very young clerk snapped a photo of me. Luna was next. The, what I assume was a 19-year-old who has never done this particular task before, pulled up a chair for Luna to stand on so that she was tall enough to reach the white backdrop. I held her legs to keep her from tumbling to the white linoleum, he said something silly to make her smile, she grinned the cutest grin, he snapped and a complete stranger stopped to tell me how adorable my little girl is…duh. It was ideal.

Before the photo guy could finish uploading the photos, a manager came over to tell us the photos had to be redone because Luna is not allowed to wear a headband in the photo. Round 2. Bring in the chair, stand up the baby, make funny sounds, make more funny sounds, eventually get a half-smile, snap the photo and done. The second round was not quite as cute as the first, but that’s cool. We were just happy to get it done. The photo guy said they will take a few minutes to edit so Luna and I walked around the store for a bit. She was getting antsy so I let her walk and lead the way through the refrigerated section.

We returned to hopefully pick up our photos and the photo guy informs me that his manager, once again, did not approve of the photo and suggested we take one of her lying down on a white backdrop to get an accurate photo. He laid down a white poster-board on the counter and I did my best to lay Luna down as well. Luna, thinking she is either about to get a diaper change or take a nap completely wigged out. We spent what felt like a half-hour (but was probably more like 5 minutes) fighting her to not only lie still, but to look at the camera over her head. There were toys, keys, singing and goofy voices involved. By the time we finished, I was sweating and she was one crying snotty mess.

Once again, we attempted to walk around the store…returned to the photo counter and guess what? We needed ONE MORE PHOTO. Turns out, her eyes were closed in the previous round of photos. Walking around the store did not appease her this time. I ended up buying one of those squeeze pouches of fruit to keep her from screaming. By the time the photo guy handed me the photos and charged me $22, I was just happy to get out of the store with my sanity.

It wasn’t until I got home and showed Husband our new photos that I realized just how bad they were. I believe Husband’s reaction was “Who the hell is this baby?” He then informed me that we could just take the photos ourselves at home. Who knew? So, that’s exactly what we did.

seriously, who is that baby?
seriously, who is that baby?

We then went on to actually get the passport, or send off for it, and we made about 427 more mistakes. You know that quote…The hardest part of the journey is taking the first step? Well, I am certain that they meant getting your passport.

Step 1 = done. Now on to many more, hopefully easier, steps. Anybody got any tips for traveling abroad with a baby? Or advice for what to do in England?

  1. I was wondering why you went to Walgreens. interesting photos. Kind of a funny post. The post office does that here. I have a lot of friends in the UK. I could hook you up if you like.

    1. I don’t know…I guess just because that’s where I had it taken the first time (7 years ago). Our post office will do it too, but their next appointment was 3 weeks from now! Honestly, I was just trying to get it done and I knew Walgreens could do it. I hope it was funny, it was meant to be!

  2. We traveled to Ireland with our then 18 month old. I had hoped that she would sleep most of the way on the place so we booked a night flight – well, no sleep! So we ended up needing a day to get back on schedule once we arrived in Dublin. So I would plan for your first day in London to be a slow day.

We brought an umbrella stroller that we didn’t really end up using; we used the carrier a lot more, even for naps.

She also didn’t really like the food over there so I was really glad I brought a lot of the squeeze pouches because she ended up living on those.

    Have fun in London!

  3. We had to get Abby’s passport photo when she was about 2 or 3 weeks old. Tried the same thing, white poster board on the ground. It was unpleasant, and I was definitely sweating. My tips are to pack lightly and efficiently, have a good stroller, and if for some reason she is crying like a banshee on the flight, just know that it will eventually end! 🙂
