There’s an episode of The Office where Pam and Jim are in the car talking, and come to the realization that they know everything about one another. Pam begins telling him a story that he has already heard, and she becomes a little sad that there are no more surprises or secrets between them… it’s not very exciting.
Husband and I do this ALL the time. Husband, especially, tells me stories from his childhood and teenage years multiple times. Sometimes, I let him tell the story again because it’s either entertaining enough to hear for a fourth time, or I’m just too lazy to say “heard this one”. Everyone once in a while he will begin telling me a story and I have to interrupt to say, “Husband, I was there, I know this one.”
I too am guilty of re-telling stories and it’s a little disheartening to realize you know EVERYTHING there is to know about each other. This is why I am so excited to tell you an embarrassing preteen story, that Husband himself just heard!
Last week, while walking through Greenwich Village, Husband and I were having a very serious conversation about Justin Timberlake. Now, Husband knows that I have a huge celebrity crush on JT, and that I always have, so during this conversation I said something along the lines of “Well, you know how I was obsessed with that NYSNYC Disney concert…” to which Husband said “What??”
I was so excited that I had never shared this information with Husband that I blabbered the entire humiliating teenage obsession without a second thought. When I was 13, NSYNC had a Disney Channel Concert come on over the summer and I taped it (#preDVR). My friends and I became obsessed with the concert and NSYNC. I am not exaggerating when I say that I watched the concert almost every day, usually multiple times a day. I literally memorized the entire concert. I knew every bit of choreography, every facial expression, mannerism, eyebrow raise, everything. I was particularly found of JT.
I often had arguments with my friends and insisted that they were insane for thinking that Backstreet Boys or 98 Degrees were even close to the level of NSYNC, and don’t even get me started on Justin. He’s untouchable. (For the record…I was right.) Anyways, my friends and I were so ridiculously in love that we bought blue tear-away pants that were identical to JT’s in the Disney concert. I once waited in line at a grocery store for tickets in the wee morning hours, had my number drawn first, and cried. Cried, because I was going to an NSYNC concert.
After, I spilled all of this to Husband he very calmly said, “Oh, I was at that Disney concert.”
I froze. No way. No freakin’ way. For a second, my thirteen year old self almost jumped up and down at the thought of knowing someone who was at this obviously phenomenal life-changing concert. Turns out that Husband was on a band field trip to Disney, and he and his friends happen to be there when NSYNC was performing. I took this as a final sign that Husband and I are meant to be. Of course, my future Husband was at the concert that I couldn’t get enough of while growing up.
Such good, silly memories. If only I had the photo of me and my friends in our tear-away pants to share…. Here’s a recent photo of Justin instead.
